PROFESSIONAL PROFILE:
EDWARD
J. ELLIS specializes in domestic and foreign
patent procurement,
evaluation and related client counseling, with particular emphasis in
the mechanical, electro-mechanical, chemical processes arts, as well
as in the field of design patents. Mr. Ellis has extensive experience
managing domestic and foreign patent portfolios. His practice also includes
conducting infringement and validity
analyses, freedom-to-operate
studies, drafting intellectual property licensing agreements and conducting
intellectual property due diligence in connection with mergers and acquisitions.
Mr. Ellis also has substantial experience in USPTO post-grant proceeding,
including reissue and ex parte and inter partes reexamination
proceedings. Mr. Ellis has drafted and prosecuted hundreds of patent
applications that cover a wide array of technologies.
Mr. Ellis works closely with clients to help them identify their intellectual
property assets, expand the scope of their inventions and fully capture
the value of their innovations. When working with a client to develop
a comprehensive IP strategy, Mr. Ellis utilizes his broad experience
which covers a vast range of
technologies and
industries. Mr. Ellis has experience with automotive devices and systems,
eye care products, optical equipment, sports equipment and games, consumer
goods, textiles and related processes, and a wide array of medical devices
and processes.
Prior to establishing Leason Ellis LLP in early 2008, Mr. Ellis was
at Darby & Darby, P.C. since 2000, and was Senior Counsel of that firm
since January 2006. Earlier in his career, Mr. Ellis gained experience
at a leading patent boutique firm located in Hartford, CT, at Vista
Scientific LLC, where he was deeply involved with all aspects of ophthalmic
and material science technologies, and in the patent law department
of Exxon Chemical Company. His experience better enables him to appreciate
an engineer’s perspective and get to the root of an invention, rather
than just protect an embodiment of a larger concept.
He has also authored articles on intellectual property issues and trends.
Patent Procurement
Mr. Ellis has worked with a diverse set of clients ranging from
large corporations to individual inventors and prides himself on the
personal touch he brings to the patent application process. No matter
how large or the small the client, Mr. Ellis applies the same professional
approach, focusing on the individual needs of the client and taking
time to understand the client’s business objectives. This enables Mr.
Ellis to cultivate a detailed patent portfolio and IP strategy that
further the achievement of the client’s business goals. Mr. Ellis is
able to quickly grasp complex engineering concepts and present them
in a compelling, intelligent, detailed patent application that reads
seamlessly.
Opinions and Patent
Related Searches
Mr. Ellis has conducted numerous patent-related searches and has
prepared opinions that are based upon patentability studies, freedom-to-operate
studies and due diligence. In addition, he has conducted and supervised
a number of searches and opinions concerning non-infringement and invalidity
of patent claims. This process often involves working closely with the
